Making its way around the country right now is the all-embracing Supanova Pop Culture Expo which aims to bring gameheads from near and far together in the one location to salivate over console games, anime, toys, comic books, trading cards and more.
The old games have never been more popular and considering Space Invaders celebrated its 30th anniversary last year (who feels old now?), the proof is not just in the playing but in its longevity. Anyone who’s experienced the knuckle-whitening fun of grasping the joystick so tightly that arthritis seems like a tickle, knows that the old games were ‘tha bomb’. Correction: are ‘tha bomb’.
Sure, you’ve got your X-Boxes, your Wii’s, your Playstations, but if you’ve done the hard yards on a classic game from the 1980’s, you’ve proven your mettle. The massive crowds buying Supanova tickets are testament to today’s massive gaming culture, but part of the attraction is that you can go along and experience new and old technologies, classic games and latest releases and rub elbows with your fellow game dude all day long.
Gaming is certainly for all ages. Seriously, who says fun is just for tiddlers? And you just know you’d be able to give today’s teens a run for their money at Galaga, right? They think they know it all with their Grand Theft Autos and their Simpsons Hit and Runs. Wait till you face off against them at Donkey Kong. Sure, you’re not blowing avatars’ faces to smithereens, and ok, you’re not stealing cars in the virtual world, but hey, Donkey Kong is cool, man!
